An Interview with Joe Becker

JoeBeckerSure.  First, if you want to hear some serious shred Joe Stump is a GREAT place to start [from what I hear] but you also gotta visit two record company websites and an instructional site and buy everything they have if you’re really into it. www.shrapnelrecords.com, www.favorednations.com and www.chopsfromhell.com.   Secondly, “Shred” isn’t a synonym for “Speed”.  “Shred” is energy.  “Shred” is technical. “Shred” is intelligent. “Shred” is impressive.  “Shred” is difficult.  This is why your girlfriend likes me so much.  That, plus I’m cute.

ChinaGuitar.ComThe average amateur guitarist doesn't have the time to sit down with the guitar and practice as much as he or she would like to.  As a great guitar teacher, could you give us some tips on this purpose?
JoeBeckerIf you don't have a lot of time to practice, make sure you spend whatever time you do have wisely.  Always practice NEW scales, techniques and ideas. Don't just play the old stuff you already know.

ChinaGuitar.Com What is your favorite music lately?
JoeBeckerRight now, I’m listening to T-Rex, “Electric Warrior” over and over again.

ChinaGuitar.Com Which guitar players do you like?  I was wondering who would give you that flutter of excitement to meet?
JoeBeckerAl Dimeola, Leo Kottke, Chuck Berry and Ed Van Halen.  If I got to meet any of those guys I’d have a stroke.

ChinaGuitar.ComWould you give us a definition in one word of your culture for each of the following great guitar players?
JoeBecker
Steve Vai: Nice.
Joe satriani: Baldie.
Eric Johnson: Pleasant.
Yngwie.j.Malmsteen: Masterful.
S.R.V: Heavy.
Jimi Hendrix: Twisted.
Marty Friendman: Cool.
Michael Angelo : Wicked.
Jason Becker: God.
Joe becker: That guy who keeps getting your girlfriend’s panties in the mail.

ChinaGuitar.ComCould you talk about your live rig or studio?
JoeBeckerAre you kidding??  I LOVE to talk about my studio.  Right now, I have 11 guitars hanging up on the wall [with 2 more waiting to get up there], ready for immediate use.  I’m running the entire Steinberg suite - Cubase VST, Wavelab – etc., etc., etc.  Here’s a pic I took of a portion of the studio while in the middle of re-arranging things recently :

On the left wall, top row middle, is a 7 string Fernandez Revolver Pro I just got from Steve Hunter.  That thing rocks!  Also, on that same wall on the bottom row you might notice a guitar with a Dragon painted on it – yeah, Chinese art is bad-ass.

ChinaGuitar.ComIf you had to pick, what amp sounds on record define your tone?
JoeBeckerWell, I normally plug directly into the board because a microphone on an amp can give you both the noise in the room and noise from the amp if you don’t set it up right.  Even an enclosure will give you noise from the amp.  But the downside of of plugging direct into the board is you can’t push any air, so amp simulation at a minimum is a must.  I’ve tried the PODS and they’re o.k., but my ancient 8-bit Digitech RP-1 has a great amp simulator in it so that’s what I tend to use.  Although, if Digitech wants to send me some NEW stuff I’d be willing to try it out – hint, hint……

Could you give us some tips on how you handle your effects?
JoeBeckerI can try!  Ha ha ha.  Really, my primary focus is to keep everything as clean as possible.  Part of that is finding a good multi-effects processing unit, so I don’t have to daisy-chain a bunch of stuff.  Also, it’s important to me when EQ-ing not to forget the mids.  People always want to tweak their bass and treble and crank their mids all the way down.  That really only sounds good for closed quarter practicing on small amps.
